India’s festivals are known throughout the world for their grandeur. Every festival is celebrated with great pomp and show everywhere! In India, festivals are not limited to their cultural significance. These grand festivals are special occasions for investing in certain things.

Auspicious metals like gold and silver are brought in huge amounts during these times. Also, some other things of religious and cultural importance are too invested in.

Just before major festivals like Diwali or Holi, there are some religiously prescribed days on which the purchases that are made are considered to be extremely lucky for the well being of the families.

You must have heard about days like Akshaya Tritiya, on which investing in gold or bringing home physical gold is considered to be auspicious. It brings luck and prosperity and ensures good health and peace in the family.

Another such day is a major Hindu festival known as Dhanteras. It is celebrated some days before the Diwali festivals. Families specifically make Diwali purchases on this lucky day.

As per Hindu beliefs, on the auspicious day of Dhanteras, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, Laxmi, emerged from the ocean while it was being churned (samudra manthan). She showed up carrying a pot filled with gold and wealth.

Therefore, Indians worship her on this day as the Goddess of Wealth. They light earthen lamps, keep their auspicious purchases alongside the deity, and seek their blessings for the upcoming year’s financial well being.

If you are confused on what to buy to bring home prosperity this Dhanteras, here are 8 things that you might consider:

1. Buy auspicious metals: Gold, Silver, Brass or Copper

Purchasing gold or silver utensils, coins, or deity figurines is considered to be most auspicious on this day. It is said that by buying them, you are directly bringing home wealth.

In case you cannot afford to buy gold or silver, you can switch to brass or copper too! They are considered to be equally pure and auspicious metals.

2. Idols of Laxmi-Ganesha

Since diwali is essentially the day to worship goddess Laxmi and along with her Ganesha, buying idols of Laxmi-Ganesha is essentially a need on this day. Laxmi-Ganesha idols are considered to be the epitome of wealth and intelligence. So, to bring home wealth and spend and grow it wisely, you must consider placing Laxmi-Ganesha in diwali puja.

You can buy them in metal or clay- depending on what you can afford.

3. A new broom to clean out the negativity!

Many Hindu devotees believe that a broom is the house of the Goddess of Wealth. Buying a broom on Diwali like buying a house for the Goddess to reside within your own house.

When you use this broom to clean your house, it is believed to clear out any negativity that may reside there. Laxmi rejuvenates your home with positivity and removes all sorts of worries especially related to wealth and health.

4. Utensils

Traditionally, new utensils made of either brass or copper are bought on this day. People avoid metals like steel, iron, or aluminium as they are typically associated with bad luck. While entering the house with newly bought items, devotees even consider filling brass or copper utensils with water or food. Knives, scissors, pins, or other sharp items that may cause one to bleed, or just harm in general, are generally removed from the shopping list on this day.

5. Invest in home appliances and electrical items

Many of the devotees believe that investing in a new electronic appliance on Dhanteras makes them work efficiently for a longer duration. So if you are planning to buy a new phone, refrigerator, TV, or anything else of that sort, today is the right day to do so.

6. The Gomti Chakra

Gomti chakra is a rare type of sea snail found in the river Gomati. This shell is believed to be a bringer of success. It also protects the owner from an evil eye. Many suggest that 11 gomti chakras are the best way to attract wealth to your house.

The shape of the gomti chakra seems to match with the sudarshana chakra of Lord Vishnu. That is why it is seen as an epitome of luck and armour against evil.

7. Start a new business!

Dhanteras is a very auspicious day to begin your business. You can open a new shop, inaugurate a new office, or even just open a new bank account. Wealth and prosperity will flow in anything that you do on this day.

8. Apparels, furniture, or real estate

Additionally, in case you were planning to buy some new apparel, personal care products, new furniture, or even invest in real estate, Dhanteras is the perfect day for that. Investments on this day are believed to give two-fold returns! So go ahead and invest without hesitation.

On the auspicious day of Dhanteras, you can and must invest in items like metals. However, as per popular beliefs, steel, iron, aluminium products, knives, scissors, etc. must be avoided at any cost on this day.

In addition, black objects, ceramic items, plastic, glass, adulterated items, etc., are all believed to be associated with evil, and buying them generally wards off the blessings.

Therefore, you must stay away from such items on this day. Consuming a non-vegetarian diet or alcoholic beverages is considered bad, not only on this day but is also true for all other festivals.

So, on this Dhanteras, avoid evil and bring home the glory of wealth. These are the things that you must consider buying on this day in order to ward off evil.

Your shopping list can be endless even on Dhanteras but a dose of traditional beliefs can make it even better and more prosperous!
