    The Uthradom day is considered the first Onam and the shubh muhurat for puja and rituals begin at 11:08 PM on September 3, 2025 and ends at 11:44 PM on September 4, 2025. 

    The Thiruvonam day is the second Onam and the shubh muhurat begins at 11:44 PM on September 4, 2025 and ends at 11:38 PM on September 5, 2025. 

    The second Onam or Thiruvonam is the most important and auspicious day of the Onam festival. It is state holiday in Kerala where majority of the Malayali community resides.

    Onam Traditions & Celebrations

    Onam is widely celebrated amongs Malayalis to mark the end of the monsoon season and the beginning of the harvest season. Culturally, the festival symbolizes the victory of evil over good and new beginnings. 

    The festival of Onam is celebrated with several traditional activities with a lot of enthusiasm. Here are the core traditions people partake in every year during the festivities:

    1. Pookalam 

    Pookalam is the tradition of making floral rangolis in front of the house. People decorate their houses and entrances with colorful flowers.

    2. Onam Sadhya  

    The tradition of Onam Sadhya includes a grand feast which is served on a banana leaf and comprises over 20 dishes.

    3. Vallamkali

    Vallamkali is a fun and competitive part of the Onam tradition where people ride snake boats on the river.

    4. Pulikali

    Pulikali is a type of folk dance which people participate in during Onam festivities. Pulikali is a tiger dance where people paint their bodies like a tiger and perform for entertainment.

    5. Oonakodi

    Oonakodi is the tradition of wearing new clothes and dress up in traditional attires. Men wear mundu and women wear kasavu sarees to symbolise new beginnings. 

    6. Traditional Games

    People also indulge in traditional games like tug of war, archery, and ball games to ignite a sense of unity and community.
