What is Utpanna Ekadashi?
First, let's talk about the name. The Sanskrit term "Utpanna" means "born", "created", or "origin".
So, the goddess Ekadashi was born on Utpanna Ekadashi.
Is Ekadashi a goddess?
Yes! She wasn't just any goddess; she was a tremendous, celestial energy that came straight from Lord Vishnu.
This day marks the start of the holy Ekadashi vrat (fast) and the day she first appeared.
The Utpanna Ekadashi Vrat Katha
The tale behind this day is like the beginning of a superhero story!
In the distant Satya Yuga, the Age of Truth, there was a demon named Mura who was extremely powerful. He was making trouble everywhere and had even beaten all the Devas (Gods), including their king, Indra.
The scared gods fled to Lord Vishnu, the only person who could help.
In his kind form, Lord Vishnu chose to fight the monster. He traveled to Chandravati, Mura's city, and a huge fight broke out.
Lord Vishnu fought fiercely with all of his holy weapons, but Mura was very strong. People say the fight lasted for 10,000 years!
At last, Lord Vishnu was fatigued. He chose to take a little break and went into a lovely cave in Badrikashram named Hemvati.
But the evil Mura followed him. He saw Lord Vishnu asleep and thought, "This is it!" This is my excellent chance to kill him!
Mura raised his weapon to hit the Lord, who was sleeping. But at that moment, a bright, blinding light came out of Lord Vishnu's body. A strong, gorgeous goddess came out with all types of divine weaponry.
This was Devi Ekadashi.
She stepped in front of the demon and told him to fight. There was a tough fight, but Mura couldn't beat her almighty power. She promptly beat him and hacked off his head.
At that moment, Lord Vishnu woke up. He noticed the goddess standing there next to the vanquished demon. He was quite happy!
He said, "On the eleventh day of the waning moon, you were born from my own energy. You shall be called Ekadashi from now on. This day will be known as Utpanna Ekadashi since you 'arose' or 'were born' from me.
He then granted her a strong boon: "Anyone who fasts on this Ekadashi day will be free from all their sins, no matter how big they are, and will eventually reach Moksha (liberation)."

How to Celebrate Utpanna Ekadashi
If you want to fast, here's an easy guide:
The Fast Begins: The fast starts on Ekadashi, which is November 15. A lot of people get up early (Brahma Muhurat), take a bath, and clean up their puja area.
Take a Vow (Sankalp): You vow to Lord Vishnu in a little, simple way that you will keep the fast.
How you observe the fast is up to you and depends on how healthy you are. Nirjala Vrat is the hardest type because it doesn't allow food or water.
The Phalahar Vrat is the most common way. You can eat "vrat-friendly" foods like fruits, nuts, milk, and others. Don't eat any beans or grains, such as rice, wheat, or dal. This is the most important rule.
Worship and chanting: Pray all day. Give Lord Vishnu flowers, incense, and a ghee candle. When you repeat the mantra "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya", it has a lot of power.
Read the Story: The Utpanna Ekadashi Vrat Katha (the story I just told you) is an important portion of the day to read or listen to.
Ending the Fast (Parana): This is really essential! The fast finishes on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at sunrise on the next day, Dwadashi.
