The Raksha Bandhan 2025 date is August 9, 2025. Find out all the details like shubh muhurat, timings, and gift ideas.

It begins with a thread, often simple, sometimes ornate, always sacred. Wrapped around the wrist with a prayer and a smile, the Rakhi carries more than just tradition.

It carries memories of shared childhoods, inside jokes, protective instincts, and unspoken promises.

Raksha Bandhan is one of India’s most heartfelt festivals—one that celebrates the timeless bond between siblings.

While many Indian festivals revolve around grand rituals, deities, and temple offerings, Raksha Bandhan is quieter in nature. It’s a festival of relationships, of love that protects and is protected in return.

Why do we celebrate Raksha Bandhan?

We don’t really know. There is no one story or one singular reason tied to the celebration of Rakhi.

One of the most popular stories is of Draupadi and Shri Krishna from the Mahabharata. Draupadi tied a piece of her saree to Shree Krishna’s hurt finger, and he vowed to protect her in return.

While this is the most popular story, there is an even older mention of the festival in the Bhagavata Purana.

Goddess Lakshmi tied a thread on King Bali’s wrist and requested him to free her husband, Vishnu, and let him come home.

Threads have been considered sacred in Hindu mythology for a very long time and have been believed to have a protective effect.

It was not traditionally limited to brother-sister relationships, and even wives used to tie protective threads on their husbands going to war.

    Raksha Bandhan Traditions

The rituals for Raksha Bandhan vary from family to family in India. But some small things remain common:

    • The sister venerates her brother by applying a tilak on his forehead and prays for his long life.

    • Then, she ties a thread or a Rakhi on her brother’s wrist for his protection and feeds him sweets.

    • The brother, in turn, promises to protect his sister forever and offers her gifts and cash.

While this is the traditional way of celebrating Raksha Bandhan, the festival has evolved over the years from a ritual centred around protection to a celebration of sibling love.

Sisters generally tie Rakhi to each other, and people even tie rakhis and exchange gifts with friends who are as close as siblings.

    Shubh Muhurat for Raksha Bandhan

In 2025, Raksha Bandhan starts at 02:12 PM on August 8, 2025, and ends at 01:24 PM on August 9, 2025.

This forms the Poornima tithi of Shravan month, when Raksha Bandhan is observed as per the Hindu calendar.

According to the Drik Panchang, the best time to tie Rakhi to your brother is the “Aparahna” time, which falls between 5:47 PM and 1:24 PM on 09 August 2025.

While the whole day of Raksha Bandhan is festive and special, this time is especially auspicious to strengthen the sibling bond.

    Why Gold or Silver Rakhis?

Most of us view Rakhis as simple threads that tie the siblings together. But introducing a piece of gold or silver has two clear benefits:

    • It makes the Rakhi more auspicious, as gold and silver are sacred elements and carry the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi with them.

    • It makes your Rakhi memories last forever, as you can store your favourite gold and silver as keepsakes and even pass them to your children.

    Raksha Bandhan Gift Ideas

The best Raksha Bandhan gift is your presence. Being with your sibling on this day and creating shared memories is the best thing you can give them.

Silver jewellery is a close second. It is thoughtful, lasting, and meaningful, often expressing what words can’t.

Your choice of jewellery for your sibling also reflects how you view them and gives them your love to keep forever in a solid silver form.

A Festival That Grows With Us

Like the bond it honours, Raksha Bandhan has grown with us. From childhood mischief to adult responsibilities, from tying threads on brothers to celebrating all forms of chosen family, it has quietly evolved while holding on to its heart.

Whether you mark the day with rituals or simple phone calls, sweets or silver, what matters is the feeling behind the thread: I’ve got you. And that promise, year after year, is worth celebrating.
