    Significance of Pitru Paksha

As per the South Indian Amanta calendar, the Pitru Paksha period falls in the lunar month of Bhadrapada.

On the other hand, the North Indian Purnimanta calendar marks the beginning of this period in the lunar month of Ashwin.

Both South Indians and North Indians observe this period on similar dates. It is only their lunar month calendar names that differ.

The last of Pitru Paksha is known as Sarvapitri Amavasya or Mahalaya Amavasya, which is the most significant day in the Pitru Paksha.

    Rituals & Traditions

According to Hindu tradition, sons are supposed to perform the Shradha ritual during the Pitru Paksha period.

It is believed that when the sons perform this ritual, the souls of their ancestors go to heaven.

The Garuda Purana scriptures state, “there is no salvation for a man without a son.”

As per popular beliefs, performing the Shradha rituals ensure that their ancestors are granted salvation and they bless their descendants with abundance of happiness and success.

Hindu devotees perform this ritual by offering food and donation to the needy. On the day of Shradha, people invite Brahmins to their homes to offer them with puri, kheer, dal, and other dishes.

Consumption of non-vegetarian dishes, food containing onion and garlic, and alcohol is also frowned upon during this period.
