Other Backward Classes (OBC)

The OBC full form is Other Backward Classes. It is an official classification used by the Government of India to identify communities that are socially and educationally disadvantaged.

This classification is part of the government’s affirmative action policy, which aims to provide equal opportunities in education, employment, and social welfare.

In India’s reservation system, the Other Backward Classes are one of the three major categories recognised for affirmative measures, along with the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).

These groups are eligible for specific benefits such as reserved seats in government jobs and welfare programs. The objective of this system is to reduce inequality and promote balanced socio-economic development among all communities.

Identification and Role of OBCs

The Backward Class Commission is responsible for identifying and recommending the communities that fall under the OBC caste list

This process is based on social and economic factors. Communities included in this list receive benefits such as reserved seats in educational institutions and government jobs.

For instance, a student from an OBC background applying for a government college can claim the reservation quota by submitting their caste certificate. Individuals can download OBC certificate through the designated state portals to avail these benefits.

Significance of Other Backward Classes

The introduction of Other Backward Classes in India’s policy system was a major step toward bridging the social gap between privileged and underprivileged communities.

While OBCs are positioned between the upper castes and the Scheduled Castes or Tribes, many still face challenges in education and employment. The reservation policy helps these communities access better resources and opportunities for growth.

The OBC classification represents an important social category aimed at promoting equality and empowerment.

By supporting communities under the Other Backward Classes category, India continues to make progress toward a more inclusive and balanced society.
