Ganesh Chaturthi is a 10-day-long festival celebrated in honour of Lord Ganesha's birthday. It is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Ganesh Utsav in many parts of the country.

It is a popular festival celebrated with a lot of zest and zeal in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, and Rajasthan.

Southern states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Kerala also celebrate the Ganesh festival.

Significance of Ganesh Chaturthi

The origin of the Hindu festival of Ganesh Chaturthi dates back to the 17th century. It was first celebrated by Chhatrapati Shivaji Rao, who was the king of the Maratha Empire.

The purpose of celebrating this festival was to unite the public and promote nationalism. It gained widespread popularity during the British colonial era and united Indians to stand against the British Raj.

Lord Ganesha is considered the remover of all obstacles and evil. Many people believe that worshipping Ganesha before starting a new venture or project brings success.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2025 Date

‍

The 10-day-long Ganesh Chaturthi festival in 2025 will start on August 27. The festival will conclude on September 6, 2025, which is celebrated as Ganesh Visarjan or Ananta Chaturdasi.

‍

Devotees bring Lord Ganesh idols to their home on the first day and worship him by performing puja. On the tenth day of the festival, they take Lord Ganesha’s idol to perform the Visarjan ritual. 

‍

Ganesh Visarjan or Ananta Chaturdasi, is celebrated with great fervour. People step out of their houses along with the idol and participate in dance and music activities, chanting, “Ganpati Bappa Morya”. 

‍

People of all ages participate in the massive spectacle of the street procession. The idol is then taken to a water body for the immersion.
