    Aadi Perukku or Pethinattam Perukku is a cultural festival celebrated in Southern India, exclusively among the Tamil-speaking population. 

    It is celebrated on the 18th day of the Tamil month of Aadi, which falls between mid-July and mid-August. The festival honours and celebrates the life-sustaining properties of water.

    • South Indian women perform Aadi Perukku puja on the banks of rivers in Tamil Nadu. On this special day, many devotees don new garments and take a dip in the river.

    • People participate in folk dance, music, and other performances to celebrate the festival. 

    • Tamil women also germinate nine grains or ‘navadhanyam,’ in an earthen pot. This ritual is called Malaipuri and is performed in every Tamilian village.
