Karwa Chauth Rituals

Karwa Chauth is a Hindu festival where women observe a fast from sunrise to moonrise. During the fasting period, women aren’t supposed to eat food or drink water.

Keeping a Karva Chauth vrat is believed to protect their husbands from the evil eye and grant them a long and healthy life.

It is widely celebrated in northern and western India. In Andhra Pradesh, it is known as Atla Tadde, where both married and unmarried women observe the fast.

Married women pray for their husbands’ long lives, and unmarried women pray for a good husband.

The fast is broken after sighting the moonrise and performing puja. Once the puja is complete, the wife looks at the moon through a sieve and then looks at her husband through the sieve.

Then the husband offers water to the wife from a pot and feeds her sweets, which puts an end to the Karwa Chauth vrat.

Nowadays, husbands give their wives new clothes, gold items, and accessories as a gift. People also go out for dinner dates or host a feast at home for all the women of the family.
