E Stamp

An e-stamp is an electronic method of paying non-judicial stamp duty to the government for transactions such as property purchase, lease agreements, business contracts, etc. It is a digital alternative to traditional stamp papers, introduced to make stamp duty payments quicker and more transparent.

The system is managed by the Stock Holding Corporation of India Limited (SHCIL), the Central Record Keeping Agency (CRA) authorised by the government.

How Does It Work?

To obtain an e-stamp, users need to fill out an online application form available on the SHCIL website. After completing the form, the payment for stamp duty can be made through various modes such as cash, cheque, demand draft, NEFT or account transfer.

Once the payment is processed, an e-stamp certificate is issued, containing a Unique Identification Number (UIN) that ensures authenticity and prevents duplication.

Individuals and businesses can complete their e-stamp registration online, which makes the process efficient and eliminates the need for physical stamp papers. This certificate serves as valid proof of stamp duty payment and can be used for multiple legal and financial transactions.

Verification and Accessibility

The authenticity of the certificate can be confirmed using e-stamp verification on the official SHCIL portal. The verification tool allows users to check whether the e-stamp certificate is genuine and legally valid. Through e-stamp login, users can also download and print their certificates, view payment status and manage multiple transactions in one place.

Suppose a buyer in Delhi purchases a commercial property.

Instead of visiting a government office for stamp paper, the buyer uses e-stamp online to pay the required stamp duty digitally. The system generates an e-stamp certificate instantly, which is later submitted during property registration. The e-stamp system has simplified the process of stamp duty payment and brought transparency and speed to documentation procedures across India.
