Govardhan Puja Rituals & Significance
On Govardhan Puja, devotees wake up early, clean their homes, and prepare for the festivities.
The main ritual involves creating a replica of Govardhan Hill using cow dung, often adorned with flowers, plants, and traditional decorations. This symbolises Lord Krishna's act of lifting the actual Govardhan Hill.
Offerings of "Annakut" (a mountain of various vegetarian dishes) are then presented to Lord Krishna.
These offerings typically include sweets, savouries, rice, fruits, and vegetables. Devotees also perform puja (worship) to Lord Krishna and the Govardhan Hill, chanting mantras and singing devotional songs.
Many people also perform circumambulation (parikrama) around the cow dung Govardhan Hill as a mark of respect. Families gather to share the Annakut prasad (blessed food) after the puja.
